Furnishing Your Home
Furniture can be bought here in Turkey, or
you may wish to bring your own from Britain especially if
you are relocating. ATC
Homes are happy to take you to
local shops and advise you on wise buys, or to advise you on
importing your own belongings.
There are
innumerable furniture shops throughout Didim. You can
usually negotiate your price within reason, and bigger
discounts are often offered if you buy most of your
furniture from the same shop. ATC Homes Turkey have
developed a good working relationship with some shops and
can help you to negotiate a good price.
There is an
increasing number of more innovative and better quality
shops opening in the area, but these goods invariably come
at a higher price. It is advisable to be mindful of your
budget and stick to it! Bodrum, Kusadasi, Aydin and Izmir
have a greater variety and choice, but you may need to
account for travel to and from these places, and for
delivery charges. Söke may be cheaper especially for white
goods, but consider again the time factor and communication
difficulties: you may need to take someone who speaks
Turkish with you.
Importing Your
Own Furniture
If you wish to
bring your own furniture and belongings into Turkey, you
will find there are many shipping export companies in the UK
advertising in the Yellow pages and elsewhere. Secure
packing and an accurate inventory of the contents of each
package is vital, you can do this yourself or your shipping
company will do it for you for a fee. You will be offered
marine insurance - it is strongly advised that you take
advantage of this safeguard. Except in cases where a
container is shared, you will seal your own container after
loading. You will be given a bill of loading by the shipping
company and it is important this document is kept safely as
it will be required in the event of any insurance claim.
You may need
to make alternative living arrangements whilst waiting for
your furniture to arrive. ATC Homes Turkey can help you
to find temporary accommodation in the interim period.
Shipping time
to Izmir averages 14-21 days depending on the departure port
and shipping schedule. Be prepared for further unforeseen
delays as your ship may not be able to dock immediately if
the weather is bad, or there may be a delay with customs.
Your shipping company will normally link up with a similar
Turkish shipping agent prior to export who will contact you
when your shipment arrives. You will need to travel to their
office in Izmir with the shipping paperwork, bill of loading,
identification and proof of your address in Turkey. They
will take you to a notary’s office where you will sign over
power of attorney for your agent to act on your behalf with
the customs authorities. There is a small fee for this. You
will then return to their office where they will check your
inventory for you and advise you on potential customs taxes.
You will then be provided with the bank details for payment
of costs and later the agent will contact you with the
precise amount you must pay by bank transfer for customs
taxes.
Please note
that customs charges are variable, but highest on
electrical
items such as TV, Hi-fi and pcs. Customs
clearance can take 5-7 days. If there are any problems or
delays with the clearance your agent will contact you.
Upon receipt
of your payment your agent will arrange for your furniture
to travel to its final destination-your new home!
